Sundays in My City: Mimi's Cafe

It's been SUCH a long time since I've joined this meme, but it's one I truly enjoy. Check out the Unknown Mami for deets and a list of all players this week.

Ok, so Mimi's isn't really in my city, but it's close. Thursday I was stuck at the car dealership getting my car worked on and needed a ride home. I called one my best friends, Jeni, and she came right over to pick me up. Not only that, she took me out to lunch! Mimi's is a cute little French-inspired bistro kinda place. Great food and atmosphere. Great company. Beautiful day.

Sundays in My City: Big Butter Jesus

Join us as we travel the world with the Unknown Mami. I am joining you from SW Ohio, just north of Cincinnati.

This statue is for real, and it is about 15 minutes from my house. You can see it on I-75, between Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio. It sits in front of a baptismal pond for the Solid Rock Church. Around these parts it's known as Big Butter Jesus or Touchdown Jesus (my favorite). The "big butter" is a reference to carvings made out of actual butter at the Ohio State Fair. Well, probably other state fairs, too.

I personally find it very distracting, and I am somewhat disgusted by the reported $250,000 it cost the church to erect. However, it has inspired a very funny song by comedian Heywood Banks. Here are the lyrics to "Big Butter Jesus":

EDIT: This post was supposed to publish last week, but computer problems prevented it. So, here are my photos from the last week of 2009!

Just a typically busy day of errands...

The day began with a quick trip to the Post Office.

Next, routine bloodwork for oldest daughter.

Unfortunately dramatic.

I promised her a McDonald's Coke

if she didn't kill anyone at the lab.

This worked quite successfully.

Oh no, Thank YOU.

On to the grocery store. LOVE this place. My total bill was around $85 for a week's worth of groceries, plus extra goodies for New Year's Eve.

We could spend hours at the library. Today we came home with two books for me, one for each kid, two movies and a CD.

Searching for a deal on a new winter coat. The place was packed.

Quite a frequent stop for us.

My favorite drive-through. The guy who works here always calls me "dear". Today I was picking up champagne and beer for

New Year's Eve.

After all those errands I needed to replenish the gas tank.

Sundays in My City: Kickin' it Old School

Perhaps a better title for this post would be,

"Kickin' DOWN the Old School".

Today's photos are of our neighborhood elementary school,

both past and present.

Mayfield Elementary was first built in 1939. (Photo retrieved from oldohioschools.com)

A few years ago the city demolished and rebuilt several elementary schools. One day I stopped and took a few pictures during the demolition. I had no idea why at the time, but I'm glad I did!

Here is the new building, erected in 2006:

I'm sure the new building has great air conditioning and is wired for new technology,

but I am a sucker for old buildings. I kinda miss the old one.

I am really enjoying this meme. It has encouranged me to seek out things I see everyday and really explore them. This week I am showing you the mural artwork of Eric Henn, an artist from my town. He has several large-scale murals here in Middletown, as well as in neighboring cities. The art in Middletown focuses largely on our history as a port on the Miami-Erie canal. Visit his website here to see more of his commercial work, including tanks, towers, zoos and aquariums all over the country.
